Remembering

Today, and everyday, I remember this amazing and beautiful woman and all that she taught me.
I was asked last night, who did you want to be like growing up? Instantly I thought of my mom.
Never did I want to be like some fake, pretty Barbie Doll, Princess or TV character. It was always a mommy who took care of babies and cooked in the kitchen.
So what does one do to become like the one he admires?
He observes, surrounds himself with and consumes everything about that person.
I remember as a little girl, pulling up the old, wooden stool next to the kitchen counter ready to learn from her expertise. I observed closely as she dusted the counter top with flour; then plopping the ball of bread dough on top! I can still smell the yeast and picture the exact towel that was used to cover the dough as it rose. She always placed the dough in a big, tan-colored bowl with dark brown crackles; kind of like a cracked egg shell. Today that same bowl sits above my kitchen cabinets. Unfortunately I have never used it to make homemade bread!
I would hover over the counter watching each step as my mom pressed with the heel of her hand and kneaded the dough. Again and again leaning her whole five foot two frame into her hands to knead the dough, over and over.
So, it reminds me today to surround myself, observe and spend time with the one that I want to be like; Jesus. If I want to love, forgive and share truth like Jesus, then I will observe His ways through His word.
Who do you want to be like?
My mom had two things that she treasured while here on earth; Jesus and her family. She would never hesitate to share her love of Jesus with you. It was her joy; something that she couldn't keep to herself.  I remember many people sharing stories after she passed away, of how she shared the love of Jesus with them. She also carried a picture of all of us kids in her purse. She would pull it out and tell you how proud she was of each of her 8 children!! We weren't a burden, but a joy in her life.
The word TREASURE has been on my mind lately. What do I most treasure in my life? What brings me the most joy and delight. What can I NOT keep to myself? Is it the fleeting, material things of this world? Is it eternal?
My prayer is that Jesus would be my treasure, and that He would be what comes off my lips and through my actions. Only He can bring TRUE joy and fulfillment.
Matthew 6:21
"Where your treasure is, your heart will be also."

John 10:10
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.

Oh, how I am thankful for what my mom taught me in the 13 short years I knew her.
